Fixing Guide - Suspended Wooden Floors
Fixing Guide - Suspended Wooden Floors

First, the installer should check that adequate underfloor ventilation is provided as the waterproof system being placed above it will prevent the migration of moisture. Floorboards (2) should be secure and rigidly fixed (BS 5268 Part 2 -1991) to the joists (1).

For projects up to 20 sq meters:

Prime the floorboard surface with Ardion 82 applied as a thin coat (3) using a foam or short pile paint roller. Allow it to dry to a clear, tacky film.

The wedi Tilebacker (5) board (minimum thickness 10mm) should be bedded onto the primed boards using Ardurit S16 cement-based adhesive incorporating Ardion 90 admix (4). The adhesive should be trowel out thoroughly and combed through to give a ribbed bed.

The Tilebacker board should be laid with staggered joints, and bedded in so no voids are present. Care must be taken not to overlap any movement joints.

When the adhesive has hardened, all board joints should be reinforced with jointing tape (ITT Glass Fibre Jointing Tape or WT50 Waterproof Joint Sealing Tape) applied in a fresh layer of Ardurit S16 / Ardion 90 adhesive (10) with a taping knife or similar tool. Immediately, a fresh layer of adhesive should be applied to the top of the tape and feathered off to the board surface.

When the adhesive has set the boards should be given additional strength from screw fixing (9) at a rate of 5 per Rectangular meter, a minimum of 30mm from the board edge. Proprietary washers (PW60) should be used, with the countersunk screws being tightened until the head is flush with the board surface. In wet areas it is worth putting silicone sealant into the holes before fixing.

For projects over 20 sq metes:

The installation follows the same steps up to an including the taping of the joints. Before the mechanical fixings are used, a layer of glass fibre mesh fabric TT60 should be placed over the boarded floor and tacked in place with the screw/washer fixings.

Tiles (7) can be fixed using Ardurit S16/Ardion 90 with a thin solid fixing bed technique to ensure there are no voids left. Once the adhesive has hardened, the tiles can be grouted (8).

Fixing Guide - Stud Walling

Fixing Guide - Stud Walling

Timber or metal studding (1) is used to provide rigid support for the wedi Tilebacker board (4).

When the studding is 75mm or higher and fixed at a rate of up to 300mm, wedi Tilebacker board with a minimum thickness of 10mm can be used. All the board edges must be supported with any horizontal joints on cross noggin.

With studding of 50mm or higher but with 600mm centres (2), wedi Tilebacker of at least 20mm (6) must be used.

The board is fixed to the framework using proprietary washer PW60 and screw fixing. These are fixed at the rate of 5 per rectangular meter at two per batten (600mm centres) The fixings must be a minimum of 30mm (5) from the edge of the Tilebacker board.

The screw fixing is tightened up to the board's surface. The washer is then driven flush to the board surface using a rubber-headed mallet and the screw is re-tightened.

A layer of adhesive is applied to joints and jointing tape (either TT25 Glass Fibre Jointing Tape or WT50 Waterproof Joint Sealing Tape) is applied while the adhesive is fresh. The tape is smoothed down with a taping knife or similar tool to remove any air bubbles and achieve a firm bedding. A thin layer of adhesive (3) is now applied on top of the tape and feathered down onto the board surface.

Tiles (7) can be applied once the taping work has set.. Again, Ardex-Flex 5001/6001 (9) is an appropriate adhesive. In wet areas, a thin solid bed fixing technique should be used to ensure there are no voids behind the tiles.

Once the bed has hardened sufficiently, the spaces between tiles can be grouted (8) with either the appropriate Ardex cement-based grout, incorporating Ardex E101 admix or the appropriate Ardex-Flex cement-based grout.

Movement joints in the tile bed, such as between adjacent walls, should be sealed with an appropriate sealant.

Fixing Guide Uneven wall surface- solid  Walling
Fixing Guide - Direct Bonding

Uneven wall surface

Where there are clean, sound brick, block or concrete walls, wedi Tilebacker can be used to create the even and moisture-resistant surface essential as a substrate for high quality tiled finishes.

Wall surfaces with considerable irregularities (2) can be brought to true using Tilebacker boards applied with either dabs or strips of suitable adhesive. Ardex-Flex 5001/6001 is one suitable material to use.

First, the wedi Tilebacker Board of minimum thickness 10mm is cut to length. The Ardex-Flex 5001/6001 is applied to the wall to provide perimeter strips (1) or dabs to receive the Tilebacker board.

While the adhesive is still fresh and moist, the board is offered up and, using a timber batten to spread the load, is beaten in to ensure a well-fixed, true surface. It is then left for the adhesive to set and harden. Drill through the wedi Tiebacker Board and adhesive dab into the wall and drive in wedi Dowels at the rate of 5 per square meter.

A layer of adhesive is applied to joints and jointing tape (either TT25 Glass Fibre Jointing Tape or WT50 Waterproof Joint Sealing Tape) is applied (5) while the adhesive is fresh. The tape is smoothed down with a taping knife or similar tool to remove any air bubbles and achieve a firm bedding. A thin layer of adhesive is now applied on top of the tape and feathered down onto the board surface.

Tiles can be applied once the taping work has set. Again, Ardex-Flex 5001/6001 is an appropriate adhesive. In wet areas, a thin solid bed fixing technique (4) should be used to ensure there are no voids behind the tiles.

Once the bed has hardened sufficiently, the spaces between tiles can be grouted (8) with either the appropriate Ardex cement-based grout, incorporating Ardex E101 admix or the appropriate Ardex-Flex cement-based grout.

Movement joints (7) in the tile bed, such as between adjacent walls, should be sealed with an appropriate sealant.

Flat wall surface If the walls are flat, Ardex-Flex 5001/6001 can be applied either direct to the wall surface or to the wedi Tilebacker board (minimum thickness 6mm) and combed out with an 8mmm x 8mm toothed and notched trowel over the complete board area to provide a ribbed bed. The board is then offered up to the surface and tapped up true.

The boards are butt jointed.

A thin layer of adhesive is now applied on top of the tape and feathered down onto the board surface.

Tiles can be applied once the taping work has set. Again, Ardu-Flex 5001 is an appropriate adhesive. In wet areas, a thin solid bed fixing technique should be used to ensure there are no voids behind the tiles.

Once the bed has hardened sufficiently, the spaces between tiles can be grouted with either the appropriate Ardurit cement-based grout, incorporating Ardion 101 or the appropriate Ardu-Flex cement-based grout.

Movement joints in the tile bed, such as between adjacent walls, should be sealed with an appropriate sealant.

Dowel Fixing Where the wall is flat and solid, but it is not possible to prepare the surface because of contamination or an unsound finish, it is possible to fix the wedi Tilebacker to the wall using wedi dowels at the rate of 5 per Rectangular meter.

A thin layer of adhesive is now applied on top of the tape and feathered down onto the board surface.

NOTE: Special Instructions - Mosaic Tiles

In applications where the selected tile size is less than 75mm x 75mm, the procedure for sealing joints (wall to floor or board to board) is changed from our standard practice.

wedi Sealing Tape is not recommended in these applications..

The sealing/jointing procedure changes to:.

Fundo-specific:. During the installation of the Fundo unit, a hybrid mastic sealant (available from wedi) is applied to the outside edges of the Fundo. This should be a generous bead application to provide gape filling characteristics. The perimeter gap should not exceed 5mm. The Fund is pressed in place and any excess sealant removed from the joint . The sealant is then allowed to dry.

General Installation: Over the joint a flexible cement membrane is applied (e.g.. Ardex WPC Coating). This is mixed to a non-flowing consistency for trowelling and filling the joint. wedi TT25 joint reinforcement tape is applied across the joint into the mix of cement membrane (apply and mix the membrane to the manufacturer's instructions). Allow the membrane to fully dry out. Ceramic tiles, mosaics etc can now be fitted in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

Fixing Tiles: Bed the tiles or mosaics using a thin 'solid bed' fixing technique using an appropriate flexible cement-based adhesive.
